Systeme.io for digital products is a good fit if you sell courses, memberships, coaching or a few PDFs and templates through a funnel with email follow-up. Systeme.io takes 0% of each sale on every plan, Free included, while Gumroad takes 10% + $0.50 on direct sales before card processing. The Free plan keeps taking payments until you reach $10,000 in lifetime sales. Look elsewhere if you need licence keys, stamped PDFs, download limits, someone else to file your EU or UK VAT, or a marketplace that brings you buyers.
We checked every price, fee and limit below against Systeme.io’s, Payhip’s and Gumroad’s own pricing pages and help centres on 20 October 2026.

Systeme.io for digital products: who it suits and who it doesn’t
Systeme.io puts a funnel builder, a checkout, an email tool, courses and communities in one account. It can sell a single file, but it works best when the sale comes at the end of a sequence: an opt-in page, a few emails, a sales page, an upsell.
It suits you if you sell:
- Online courses, with drip release, quizzes and a public course page.
- Memberships and communities, billed as subscriptions or payment plans.
- Coaching and calls, with unlimited bookings on every plan.
- A handful of ebooks, PDFs or templates that you promote with an opt-in page and an email sequence.
It does not suit you if you need:
- Licence keys for software or plugins.
- Stamped PDFs or download limits to discourage sharing.
- A marketplace that sends you buyers you didn’t find yourself.
- Someone else to file and pay the VAT on your EU or UK sales.
Payhip and Gumroad cover most of that second list. But if your plan is “build a list, sell a course, add a membership later”, handing a storefront 10% of every sale makes little sense when Systeme.io charges 0% and lets you start on $0.
The Free plan limit that bites first for a seller is one tag and one automation rule, because Systeme.io’s own tutorial uses both to email a file. For the verdict on the whole platform, read our full Systeme.io review. If you’re choosing between Systeme.io and an agency-style CRM, our Systeme.io vs GoHighLevel comparison puts the monthly bills side by side.
What can you sell on Systeme.io? Product by product
Using Systeme.io for digital products means selling each one from a funnel’s payment page, with the offer type set to “Digital Product”. The closest thing to a Systeme.io digital store is the public “school” page at yourdomain.com/school, and it lists courses only.
| Product | Fit | Start on | What it relies on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online courses | Strong | Free (1 course) | Full, partial or drip access; quizzes; bundles |
| Memberships, communities | Strong | Free (1 community) | Subscriptions with trials; payment plans |
| Coaching and calls | Good | Free | Unlimited bookings; 1 calendar on Free |
| Ebooks, PDFs, templates | Good at small volume | Free | "Digital Product" offer; unlimited file storage |
| Software with licence keys | Poor | n/a | No licence-key feature documented |
Ebooks, PDFs and templates
On the payment page you set Offer type to “Digital Product”, name it, attach a resource and add a price plan. The help centre is blunt about that last step: “It is essential to define a price plan to save your digital product.” Systeme.io publishes no cap on the number of digital products, and file storage is unlimited on every plan.
Its ebook tutorial (updated 13 April 2026) gives three ways to deliver the file:
- As an email attachment, up to 5 MB.
- As a download link in the email (Google Drive, Dropbox or similar cloud storage).
- As a direct download link on the thank-you page.
The two email methods need a tag plus a “New Sale” automation rule that sends the file. The thank-you page method needs neither: add a text link, image or button with the “Download file” action, or share the file URL Systeme.io generates. The 5 MB attachment cap is tight for an image-heavy ebook or template pack, so use a link for anything bigger.
Online courses
Systeme.io for courses is the strongest case. Each course has three access types: full, partial (chosen modules only) or drip, where lectures unlock on a delay. You can also set an access date and an expiry after a set number of days. Quizzes, comment sections and course bundles are built in, and the school page lists every course that has a linked sales page.
Videos can be up to 2GB each (under 100MB is recommended), and media storage is unlimited. Plans allow 1, 5, 20 or unlimited courses. Free caps you at 500 students and paid plans have no student limit. The pricing page’s “All plans include” strip says “Unlimited students”, which contradicts its own table and FAQ, so plan on 500 for Free.
One catch: the automatic enrolment email buyers receive “cannot be customized”, according to the help centre. If you’re also weighing a course-first platform, we compared Systeme.io vs Kajabi for course creators on cost.
Memberships and communities
Price plans come in three types: one-time payment, subscription (with an optional free trial in days, weeks, months or years) and payment plan, such as 5 monthly payments. Put a drip course on a subscription and you have a membership.
Communities run 1, 5, 20 or unlimited by plan, with unlimited members on all of them. Every plan also includes your own affiliate program, so other people can sell your membership or ebook for a commission.
Coaching and calls
Bookings are unlimited on every plan, Free included; the cap is on event types (calendars): 1, 5, 20 or unlimited. Sell a coaching package as a one-time price or payment plan, then send buyers to the calendar. If you sell from a recorded webinar, evergreen webinars start on the $47 Webinar plan, which allows 10.
Software and licence-key products
We found no licence-key feature in any Systeme.io help article we read. Payhip gives each buyer a unique licence key automatically, and Gumroad generates keys too. If your product needs activation, start with one of them.

Can you sell digital products on the Systeme.io free plan?
Yes. The Systeme.io Free plan “never expires and does not require a credit card”, takes payments through Stripe or PayPal and charges 0% per sale. The limits that matter for a seller aren’t the ones most pages quote.
| Free plan limit | What it means when you sell |
|---|---|
| 1 tag, 1 automation rule | One emailed product uses both |
| 1 course, 500 students | One paid or free course, capped at 500 people |
| 1 upsell, 1 order bump, 1 coupon | One of each to raise order value |
| 3 funnels, 15 steps | Room for a few small product funnels |
| 2,000 contacts | The ceiling on your email list |
| $10,000 lifetime sales | Payment pages stop taking new sales |
Limits from Systeme.io’s pricing table and help centre, checked 20 October 2026.
The $10,000 lifetime cap
Systeme.io’s help centre (updated 7 October 2026) is plain about it: “Free accounts have a lifetime sales revenue limit of $10,000 USD.” A warning banner appears at $8,000, and at $10,000 “your payment pages will stop accepting new sales.” Under the terms, sales in other currencies are converted to USD, and at the cap you get an email and 3 days to upgrade. You are not charged automatically, and affiliate commissions don’t count towards the limit.
On a $27 ebook, $10,000 is about 370 sales. That’s plenty for a first product, but the cap is lifetime rather than monthly, so upgrade before a launch instead of halfway through one.
The tag and rule trap
Systeme.io’s own ebook tutorial delivers the file with a tag and a “New Sale” automation rule, and Free gives you exactly one of each. Email one product to buyers and you’ve used both, so your lead magnet can’t have its own.
If you’d rather pay to fix it, Startup costs $17 a month for 10 tags, 10 automation rules, 5 workflows, 10 email campaigns, 5 courses, unlimited students and 10 each of upsells, order bumps and coupons. Our pricing breakdown lists every Systeme.io plan limit.
Systeme.io vs Payhip vs Gumroad: what does each sale cost?
Systeme.io charges a flat monthly price and no per-sale fee. Gumroad, and Payhip below its $99 Pro plan, take a percentage on top of card processing. So Systeme.io costs less per sale on every plan, with one fair catch covered below.
| Platform and plan | Monthly | Fee per sale | Card fees on top | Pays your sales tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Systeme.io Free | $0 | 0% | Yes | Calculates VAT only |
| Systeme.io Startup / Webinar / Unlimited | $17 / $47 / $97 | 0% | Yes | Calculates VAT only |
| Payhip Free / Plus / Pro | $0 / $29 / $99 | 5% / 2% / 0% | Yes | EU and UK digital VAT |
| Gumroad (direct sale) | $0 | 10% + $0.50 | Yes | Yes, all of it |
| Gumroad (Discover) | $0 | 30% | Included | Yes, all of it |
Our maths applies Stripe’s standard US card pricing (2.9% + 30¢ per domestic charge, checked 14 October 2026) on all three platforms, except Gumroad’s Discover fee, which already includes processing. Payhip’s FAQ says “PayPal and Stripe will still charge at their standard rates”, and Gumroad’s help centre lists card processing separately.
What you keep from each sale
| Price | Systeme.io (any plan) | Payhip Free | Payhip Plus | Gumroad direct |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $9.41 | $8.91 | $9.21 | $7.91 |
| $27 | $25.92 | $24.57 | $25.38 | $22.72 |
| $100 | $96.80 | $91.80 | $94.80 | $86.30 |
Our arithmetic from each pricing page, checked 20 October 2026. Monthly plan fees not included. Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ applied to every platform.
A year of ebook sales, side by side
Say you sell 50 copies of a $27 ebook a month: 600 sales and $16,200 a year. Stripe’s cut (about $650) is the same everywhere, so this compares platform costs only:
| Platform and plan | Year's platform cost | How it adds up |
|---|---|---|
| Gumroad (direct) | $1,920 | $1,620 (10%) + $300 ($0.50 × 600) |
| Payhip Pro | $1,188 | $99 × 12, no per-sale fee |
| Payhip Free | $810 | 5% of $16,200 |
| Payhip Plus | $672 | $348 plan + $324 (2%) |
| Systeme.io Startup | $170 to $204 | $170 billed annually, $204 monthly |
Systeme.io Free would cost $0 here, but it would stop taking payments at $10,000, around sale 371 in month 8. Startup is the fair comparison.
The break-even points:
- Startup vs Gumroad, on a $27 product: Gumroad takes $3.20 more per sale, so it costs more than Startup’s $17 from 6 sales a month.
- Startup vs Payhip Free: Payhip’s 5% passes $17 once you sell $340 a month.
- Startup vs Payhip Plus: Systeme.io is cheaper at every sales level, since Plus starts at $29 a month before its 2%.
After $20,000 in paid sales in a calendar month, Gumroad’s fee on new direct sales that month drops to 5% + $0.50, and the count resets monthly.
Systeme.io vs Payhip
Payhip is the closer rival. Every plan gets the same features, and it handles EU and UK digital VAT by default, stamps PDFs and limits downloads. Systeme.io costs less than Payhip Free from $340 a month in sales and less than Plus at any volume, with funnel pages, email and courses in the same account. Pick Payhip if you sell files to EU and UK buyers and want the VAT off your plate. Pick Systeme.io if the file is one step in a funnel you’re building anyway.

What doesn’t Systeme.io do for digital sellers?
Check these before you commit to Systeme.io for digital products. Plenty of sellers will never run into any of them.
- No documented file protection. None of Systeme.io’s help articles on selling ebooks, adding downloadable files, hosting files, selling courses or VAT mention PDF stamping, download limits, expiring links or licence keys (checked 20 October 2026).
- No marketplace. Nothing on Systeme.io sends you buyers, and the pricing page lists no discovery feature. Every sale comes from your own traffic.
- VAT is calculated, not filed. For “information products and services”, Systeme.io adds the buyer’s country VAT rate to your ex-VAT price at checkout, but only if the order form has a Country field. Without one, “the VAT rate applied will be 0%.” Nothing in its help centre or terms says it files or pays that VAT for you.
- 5 MB email attachments, so bigger files go out as a link.
- A fixed enrolment email that can’t be customised.
- No refunds on your own plan. Article 3 of the terms: “our subscription plans are not refundable.” Start on Free and upgrade when you outgrow it.
A course creator selling to an audience they built won’t notice most of these. Someone selling a $9 template pack to strangers in 30 countries will.
When should you use Payhip or Gumroad instead?
What you sell matters more here than the fee table. This is how the three compare on file protection and tax.
| Feature | Systeme.io | Payhip | Gumroad |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDF stamping | Not documented | Buyer's email and purchase date on each page | Buyer's email, per-file option |
| Licence keys | Not documented | Automatic, one per buyer | Generated keys |
| Tax filed for you | No statement it does | EU and UK digital VAT | All of it (merchant of record) |
| Fee per sale | 0% | 5% / 2% / 0% | 10% + $0.50 |
Pick Payhip or Gumroad if:
- You sell software or plugins. Payhip sends each buyer a unique licence key automatically, and Gumroad generates keys.
- You want stamped PDFs or download limits. Payhip stamps the buyer’s email and purchase date on each page of portrait PDFs under 250MB, and its download limit defaults to 5. Gumroad stamps the buyer’s email onto the PDF, though its help centre calls this “not DRM”.
- You want tax filed for you. Gumroad handles all of it; Payhip handles EU and UK digital VAT.
- You want a marketplace. Gumroad’s Discover can send you new customers, at 30% of each sale it brings in.
- You sell one cheap file, rarely, with no email list. Any of the three works, and Systeme.io Free also costs $0.
A hybrid also works: sell the file on Payhip or Gumroad and run the opt-in pages and emails on Systeme.io Free. You’d pay their fee but keep their tax handling and file protection, and run two dashboards. If you resell other people’s content, read our guide to selling PLR products first, because licence terms decide which platforms you can use. We haven’t covered Stan Store, as we couldn’t verify its current pricing.
How do you set up a digital product on Systeme.io?
You can sell digital products on Systeme.io in an afternoon if your file and sales copy are ready. These steps follow its help-centre tutorials for ebooks and courses.

Which Systeme.io plan fits your digital product?
Start on Free and let a real limit push you up. Systeme.io plans aren’t refundable, so upgrading early gets you nothing back.
| Plan | Price | Pick it if |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | One product or one course, no webinar, under $10,000 in lifetime sales |
| Startup | $17/mo · $170/yr | More than one emailed product, more than 500 students, or 2 to 5 courses |
| Webinar | $47/mo · $470/yr | You sell from an evergreen webinar, or need up to 20 courses |
| Unlimited | $97/mo · $970/yr | Many courses, many funnels, or more than 10,000 contacts |
Annual prices are “2 months free” on Systeme.io’s pricing page; the totals are our arithmetic. Checked 20 October 2026.
For most sellers with one ebook or one course at a time, that means Free until the tag limit or the $8,000 banner shows up, then Startup. Webinar earns its $47 only if you sell from a recorded webinar; Unlimited is for catalogues and big lists. The full breakdown is in Systeme.io pricing, plan by plan, and if you’re weighing a bigger funnel suite, here’s how Systeme.io compares with ClickFunnels.

Frequently asked questions
Can I sell digital products on Systeme.io's free plan?
Yes, until $10,000 in lifetime sales. Free allows 1 tag, 1 automation rule, 1 course and 500 students, so deliver files from the thank-you page.
How do I deliver an ebook or PDF after purchase on Systeme.io?
As an email attachment up to 5 MB, as a download link in the email, or as a download link on the thank-you page. The email options need a tag and a "New Sale" automation rule.
Does Systeme.io take a cut of digital product sales?
No. Systeme.io charges 0% per sale on every plan, Free included. Stripe or PayPal still charge their processing fees.
Is Systeme.io better than Gumroad for selling ebooks?
It's cheaper per sale ($25.92 kept from a $27 ebook against $22.72 on a Gumroad direct sale), but Gumroad does more for its fee: it pays your sales tax as merchant of record, stamps PDFs, generates licence keys and runs Discover.
Systeme.io vs Payhip: which is cheaper?
Systeme.io Startup ($17 a month) costs less than Payhip Free once you sell more than $340 a month, and less than Payhip Plus at any volume. Below that, both free plans cost $0 a month, but only Payhip takes a cut (5%).
Does Systeme.io protect PDFs from being shared?
We found no PDF stamping, download limits or expiring links in Systeme.io's help articles (checked 20 October 2026). Payhip and Gumroad both stamp PDFs.
Does Systeme.io handle VAT on digital products?
It calculates it: with a Country field on the order form, it adds the buyer's country VAT rate at checkout (without one, 0%). Nothing in its help centre or terms says it files or pays that VAT.
Can I sell courses with monthly payments or memberships on Systeme.io?
Yes. Price plans can be subscriptions with an optional free trial, or payment plans with a fixed number of payments. Add drip access for a membership.
Does Systeme.io have a marketplace where buyers find my products?
No, so you bring your own traffic. Gumroad's Discover does send buyers, at 30% of each sale it brings in.
Can I sell software with licence keys on Systeme.io?
We found none documented. Payhip issues a unique key to each buyer automatically, and Gumroad generates keys too.
The bottom line
Systeme.io for digital products is the cheapest of the three platforms here if you sell courses, memberships, coaching or a few files to an audience you’re building with email. It takes 0% per sale, Free runs until $10,000 in lifetime sales, and Startup at $17 a month lifts the one-tag, one-rule limit.
Choose Payhip or Gumroad if you need licence keys, stamped PDFs, a marketplace or someone else to file your VAT, because their fees pay for that work. If you need none of it, there’s no reason to give up 5% or 10% of every sale.
